  • The Exhaustion You Can’t Sleep Off – Understanding Your Nervous System

What your nervous system has been trying to tell you

There’s a kind of exhaustion that doesn’t show up on lab tests.

You can’t out-sleep it. You can’t out-organize it. You definitely can’t out-hustle it.

It’s the exhaustion that lives inside the body.

In the spaces between hypervigilance and collapse.

In the quiet hum of “I’m fine” when you’re not.

In the habits of pushing through when your body whispers, please stop.

You might know it well.

The kind of tired that comes from holding yourself together for too long.

From carrying everyone else’s needs. From being in “go mode” long after it was safe to slow down.

Because no one taught you how to rest.

Not real rest—the kind that comes when your nervous system finally believes it’s safe.

We are not designed to be always on.

But the world doesn’t tell you that.

It rewards the over-functioning. The performers. The ones who stay regulated enough to survive—but never slow enough to actually feel safe.

And when your nervous system has been in fight, flight, or freeze for decades, stillness can feel terrifying.

Your body doesn’t trust the pause. Because once, it wasn’t safe to slow down. It wasn’t safe to need.

So you keep going. You “manage.” You survive.

But deep down, your body is screaming. Not in words. In fatigue. In anxiety. In chronic pain and brain fog and an inability to ever feel truly rested.

And maybe the real reason you’re exhausted isn’t because you’re broken.

Maybe it’s because your body has been protecting you all along.

🌀 Somatic Reset: “Come Home to the Body” (5 minutes)

1. Find a Place to Land:

Sit or lie down somewhere you feel even slightly safe. Let your body be supported.

2. Weight and Warmth:

Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly. Let your breath meet your hands.

3. Three Layers of Breath:

  • Inhale gently through your nose.
  • Exhale slowly through your mouth with a soft “hmm” or “shhhh”.
  • Feel where your breath goes. Stay curious, not forceful.

4. Anchor Phrase:

Say silently or out loud: “I don’t have to fight right now. I can soften, even just a little.”

5. Pause + Notice:

Let your body know: I’m not rushing you. I’m here.

🖋️ Journal Prompt: The Truth Beneath My Tired

“If my exhaustion could speak, what would it say?”

Let your nervous system answer:

  • What am I carrying that no one sees?
  • Where have I been overriding my limits?
  • What does real rest look like for me?

You’re not meant to do this alone.

This kind of healing—of returning to your body after years of survival—deserves support.
